Automated test
A small piece of code that runs part of an app and checks the result itself, every time it runs.
Automated tests turn 'looks right' into a check you can repeat. In test-first work, the test is written and seen to fail before the code exists. A test only proves the examples you give it, so those examples must look like real data, including empty values and odd cases. Tests that touch a database use a throwaway database, never a shared one.
