Heartbeat
A periodic signal a process sends to show it is still running.
A heartbeat lets other systems know when a worker or agent stops silently. If the signal does not arrive within the agreed time, an alert goes to the person responsible. Without a heartbeat, a dead process can go unnoticed for days.
