Deploy and release
A deploy installs a new version on a server; a release is that version once people start using it.
A deploy is the technical step; a release is the decision that the version is ready for use. A safe deploy follows a runbook: the build passed, migrations ran first, a rollback has been tried, and someone watches afterwards. An agent can prepare a deploy, but a person presses the last button.
